~ Glossary of Witchcraft Terms ~ Full Moon Sabbat
One of thirteen monthly lunar celebrations of the Full Moon. It is a time for working magic and healing, as well as special personal, family, or group celebrations. Prior to the 20th century, a regular meeting of witches on the Full Moon was referred to as a "sabbat." The term esbat was misunderstood by Margaret Murray and this error was reflected in her famous study on witchcraft. It appears that Gerald Gardner was unaware of the correct terminology and assumed Murray's misunderstanding was correct when in creating Wicca he labeled the festivals "sabbats" and the sabbats "esbats."
