Traditional British Witchcraft Pentacle
The pentacle and especially the pentagram are revered symbols of witchcraft and are commonly used as protective amulets. The pentagram is often referred to as a pentacle in everyday conversation. Historians believe the Sumerians were the first to use the pentacle as a sacred object. From that time, the pentacle has been used as a symbol. The pentacle holds ritually symbolic meaning to many modern Pagans. The four lower points represent the Four Elements of earth, air, fire, and water, while the top point represents God. The ritual pentacle disk, used on the altar in Ceremonial Magick, Wicca, and Neo-Paganism, is one of the four principle Elemental Tools of the Western Esoteric Tradition; the others are the athame (dagger), wand, and the chalice (cup). The pentacle is a correspondent of one of the four quarters associated with the ritual circle, or compass round, and quarter's associated powers, attributes, and qualities. In the Traditional Craft other objects commonly take the place of the pentacle disk in ritual and magical workings, especially popular is the bowl or empty space in front of the practitioner. The idea of a pentacle disk or bowl or other item used as a center point, is to have a physical object to focus energy from the practitioner. This energy is then used in ritual, such as in consecration, or in magic, energy is raised and then directed to its final goal. It should be noted that the pentacle disk, or any object used in ritual or magic, are used only as an aid. They do not have any intrinsic power of their own and are not actually necesary in ritual or in magic. Ritual Tools
