Dagger

athame

(pronounced: ah-THAW-may)

A dagger is used as a working knife and ritual knife. While any knife will do, many now keep a special knife for ritual.

There are no requirements for a knief used, except that it be sharp. Typically, a dagger may have:

  • A double-edged metal blade.
  • A length of between 5 to 13 inches, although size doesn't matter.
  • A black or brown wooden handle. Some claim black to be more traditional.

Many Trad Crafters (witches) will use any knife from the kitchen or the garden shed that is handy. Many will simply use their power-hand in place of any blade. However, many others do use a formal ritual dagger along the lines described above, eventhough a formal dagger is not specifically a tradition in many Trads.

Whatever item is used should be consecrated.
