~ Glossary of Witchcraft Terms ~ abracadabra
A continental European magickal spell of unknown origin but dating at least from the Middle Ages, possibly much earlier. It would be cast in order to be rid of an illness. The term, abracadabra, may come from the Aramaic phrase, abhadda kedhabhra. Aleister Crowley said it was a word of great power, but that the correct word form is abrahadabra. In use, the word would be spoken or written, repeatedly, each time with one additional letter removed from the end, continuing until ending with only the first letter.
